Growth on growth: refurbishing a Gold Coast pharmacy into a stronger business
Broadbeach Pharmacy had the plans, the team and the location, but not the cash. After reaching maximum capcity with her existing financier, owner Julia used a TradeBridge revolving credit facility to refit the store, rebuild stock and launch a new compounding service. Two years of 10% growth later, she refinanced with a major bank on stronger terms.

The Background
Broadbeach Pharmacy sits on the highway in a strip shop opposite the Gold Coast Convention Centre and the tram station, the most exposed position in a precinct packed with restaurants and retail. It is one of four pharmacies in the area, and Julia has been on the site for 14 years.
The customer base is unusually mixed. Overseas tourists pass through constantly. Interstate visitors who return for three months every year, some for a decade or more, count as locals. And a genuine neighbourhood following underpins the lot.
"Every day that I'm there the customers call me boss. And they say, we walk past two other pharmacies from our doctors to come to your pharmacy, because your staff are so amazing."
Julia Clare, Owner, Broadbeach Pharmacy
That reputation is built on a remarkably stable team. Julia's PA and shop manager has been with her for 20 years, her pharmacist Chris for 15, her stock controller for 12.
“TradeBridge don't need to ask multiple questions on how the business operates. With over 1,000 pharmacies funded across Australia and the UK, they understand the industry and the PBS cashflow process.”

Their challenge
COVID left two problems behind. Stock had been hard to get throughout the pandemic, levels dropped, and they were never properly replenished. At the same time, the cash Julia had saved in the bank went into relocating the doctors opposite, covering their move and part of their fit-out.
The investment was the right one, but it left nothing spare. And the shop itself was tired. It needed a refurbishment, new categories and fresh stock to make the most of the extra scripts now coming through the door.
Julia went to her existing financier and asked for funding. They declined.
"They couldn't see the vision."

Our solution
Julia came across TradeBridge and spoke to Dan, who walked her through how a PBS-backed revolving credit facility works.
She had one significant reservation, and it is a common one: the facility requires the weekly PBS payments to reimburse the outstanding balance of the facility.
"I was thinking, who is this company? All my PBS payments are going to be going through them. I was a bit nervous about that."
Two things settled it. The first was the conversation itself.
"Banks can be very formal and sometimes quite intimidating. The TradeBridge team are all very approachable and friendly, and that made me feel comfortable with the process."
The second was doing her own homework. Julia looked TradeBridge up and found an established London-headquartered business with real backing behind it, not a startup.
"I was thinking, who is this company? All my PBS payments are going to be going through them. I was a bit nervous about that."

Why a revolving facility and not a loan?
Julia had looked at other finance options. They were more expensive, they were structured as term loans rather than lines of credit, and none of them let her offset undrawn funds.
"I particularly liked that I could leave the funds in the account and not pay interest on them. They're sitting there and I just draw them down when I need them. It's not like a loan where you're paying interest all the time."

- More funding than other lenders (up to 10x weekly PBS income)
- Pharmacy specialists who understand your business
- Quick decisions so you can move at pace
- Flexible credit line with no set repayments
- Only pay for the finance you use

The outcome
The refit
With the facility in place, Julia rebuilt the store. Counters came out, which freed up significant floor space. Two new gondola rows went in and were filled with stock. Overall stock holding increased by around $60,000.
Growth on growth
Sales grew 10% in the first year, then 10% again in the second, roughly 20% over two years, compounding on itself.
An unplanned new service
Julia had built a purpose-built room for cannabis dispensing before taking the facility, but the category proved slow to get off the ground. With funds available to draw on, she changed direction and converted the space to compounding instead.
That meant a $15,000 fume hood, mixing equipment, sending staff to Sydney for four days' training at a significant investment. Compounding is now up and running and growing.
"It wasn't a category I'd planned for in the first place. It was good to have the funds there to draw on to be able to complete that."

From facility to refinance
Two years of growth changed the numbers underneath the business. Julia commissioned a new valuation. Her loan-to-value ratio had fallen significantly, and cash flow was materially stronger.
She took those figures to another financier, secured a refinance on more favourable terms across the board, and paid down the TradeBridge facility.
"The whole process was so streamlined, quick and easy. It enabled me to grow the business and then get the outcome that I wanted: to refinance and have better cash flow and a stronger business."

The pharmacy is now busy enough that the next constraint is people. Julia is looking to add staff.
Julia's advice to other pharmacy owners
Asked what she would say to an owner sitting where she sat two and a half years ago, weighing up the same reservations:
"It's a very sound business, it's gone through the test of time, and I've never had any hiccups. Just don't worry about it and go for it."
